Book Lapland Independently – Real Freedom Instead of Tour Packages
Organising Your Own Lapland Trip – A Practical Guide
Many travellers believe that a holiday in Lapland is only possible through specialised tour operators. These companies sell expensive packages with fixed schedules, transfers and standardised activities. But that is no longer necessary. If you know how to plan, you can organise everything yourself – cheaper, more flexible, and much more personal.
A stay at Mökki Tikka is made for travellers who value independence, nature and authenticity, and who prefer genuine experiences over mass tourism.
Organising Your Own Lapland Trip – A Practical Guide
1. Flights and Arrival
Most guests arrive via Rovaniemi. Finnair and Norwegian fly from Zurich, Munich or Berlin via Helsinki. Early booking can save you several hundred euros. After landing, the easiest option is to
rent a car directly at the airport. Companies such as Europcar, Sixt and Scandia Rent offer four-wheel drive vehicles with winter tyres, which are essential in snowy conditions. The drive to
Ranua takes about one and a half hours on well-maintained roads.
Driving in Lapland is straightforward, but you need to allow extra time. On snowy or smaller roads, travel time increases by roughly fifty percent. The quiet roads, open landscapes and proximity to nature make every journey part of the adventure.
2. Accommodation – Book Directly with the Host
Instead of booking a package through an agency, book your cabin directly. It saves fees and puts you in personal contact with the people who actually live here.
Mökki Tikka
sits right on Lake Koirajärvi in Ranua, surrounded by forest and silence. The log house has a sauna, fireplace and room for up to ten guests. Hosts Alexandra and Stefano live here part-time and share honest local advice based on their own experience.
Contact with locals is one of the most rewarding parts of travelling. It gives you a genuine sense of place and culture. Finns are quietly open, often reserved at first, but kind and sincere. A short chat at a shop, a conversation at a reindeer farm or a guided day outdoors can reveal more about Finland than any brochure.
It would be a shame to visit a country only to follow a standard itinerary in fluent English, missing the charm, humour and daily life of its people. Lapland only shows its true soul when you meet those who call it home.
3. Activities – Book Directly and Stay Flexible
Many visitors think that husky rides, snowmobiles or reindeer tours can only be booked through big portals. Not true. In Lapland, most things can be arranged personally and locally.
A top recommendation is the O’Nordic Husky Farm
in Posio. Small, family-run and focused on the well-being of the dogs, it offers intimate and ethical experiences away from the crowds. The drive from Ranua takes longer, but it’s worth every kilometre.
Another great option is the Arctic Borealis Husky Farm
in Ranua. In winter they offer sled tours, while in autumn you can enjoy dog-cart rides or walks with the huskies. Located away from the Ranuazoo, it’s a good choice for those who prefer an organised but still personal experience. Autumn is quieter and more intimate, winter more active and social.
in Impiö is also worth a visit. You can feed the reindeer, learn about their history and husbandry, and taste traditional Finnish food.
For wilderness adventures, there is Juha Impiö, our trusted local partner who lives nearby. He knows the area like no one else – where to find wildlife, which routes are safe, how the weather shifts and where to discover hidden places that visitors never find. Exploring with him means seeing Lapland through local eyes.
If you visit the Ranuazoo, you can observe many Arctic animals in naturalistic enclosures. It’s particularly interesting for families who want to see the northern wildlife before spotting it in nature.
